Henderson, 53, is retired from AT&T, where he worked for 25 years.
He and his wife, Dorothy, have three grown children and are active in the First Baptist Church of North Tulsa.
Henderson, a lifelong Tulsan, said it is his love for the city and his desire to make it better that has kept him so involved.
He has worked with Housing and Urban Development projects, the northside YWCA and the city's policy oversight committee for Community Development Block Grant funding.
He also has taken leadership roles with the local chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and 100 Black Men of America.
He also was involved in changing Tulsa's commission form of government to the Mayor-City Council, which was enacted in 1990.
