World-class sports complex under construction in North Tulsa
Tulsa, Okla. ? Construction has already kicked off on
the North Tulsa Sports Complex, which will be home to 22 soccer
fields, playgrounds, a skate park and a BMX park. The complex at
56th Street North and Highway 75 is expected to add $2.1
million to the local economy each year, when combined with other
Vision 2025 improvements to Mohawk Park. Mohawk Soccer Complex is
already scheduled to host an international tournament in spring of
2012.
Phase 1 of the $12 million project includes 17
international-sized soccer fields, lighting for ten fields, team
warm-up areas, two playgrounds, picnic seating, a concession
building, restroom facilities and spectator seating. Phase 2 will
add five fields to the complex, lighting for seven more of the
Phase 1 fields, paved parking lots, two additional playgrounds, and
additional concession stands. Phase 2 will also extend the roadway
eastward to 56th Street North, which will provide a second entrance
to the complex.
The fully funded project will be paid for by various sources,
including Vision 2025 ($5.2 million), 2006 sales tax revenues ($3.8
million), 2001 sales tax revenues ($750,000) and a private donation
to Park Friends ($13,000).
The BMX Park will be located south of the skate park, which
opened in April 2011 [there has yet not been any planning,
programming or cost estimating provided on the BMX facility].
Construction at the site is now 28 percent complete. The North
Tulsa Soccer Complex is scheduled to open in May of 2012. This
modern venue is expected the center to host local, regional and
national soccer tournaments shortly after the opening of the
complex, as well as Tulsa-area youth and adult soccer league
matches.
